Designed by renowned Malaysian architect, Cheong Yew Kuan, Villa Samadhana fuses modern minimalism with traditional Asian sensibility. Soaring thatched roofs, polished concrete counters and ‘floating’ bridges and walkways create a Balinese resort fantasy within the grounds of a family residence. The villa owner is obviously an art lover and he generously shares this passion with guests. Antique textiles, slender wooden silhouettes, hand-carved stone sculptures and Asian-inspired paintings add to the character of both the interiors and gardens. The open-sided living and dining room features views out across the far-reaching lawns with unique Dr Seuss-like trees from Madagascar. The use of mixed materials, including creamy white Palimanan stone and dark tropical hardwoods softened by comfortably upholstered seating areas in both neutral tones and exotic reds, create a clean and inviting space.

Three pavilions – the main house, guesthouse and pool/entertainment pavilion – form a functional, single-level layout. The main house contains the living room, dining room (with table for 12), fully equipped gourmet kitchen and air-conditioned media room. To one side of the living areas are two guest bedrooms (one queen and one twin) with a shared, semi-open-air bathroom in between. To the other side, surrounded by extensive koi ponds, is the villa’s showpiece – the master suite. Here, a covered bridge leads to a private inner courtyard with potted orchids and a massive frangipani tree that provides wonderful shade. Sliding hardwood doors open into a sitting room with a Japanese-style contemplation space that appears to float above the ponds. The sleeping chamber has a minimalist platform-style king-size bed, hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, Thai raw silk curtains and uninterrupted views out to the working rice paddy fields and Indian Ocean beyond.

The two-bedroom guesthouse is situated towards the villa’s entrance. Each bedroom is equipped with a queen-size bed, ample seating area and semi-open-air ensuite bathroom. A casual living room and small kitchen provide gathering space in between.

The poolside entertainment pavilion demonstrates that outdoor living is deemed equally as important as inside space at Villa  pavilion and the 25m pool is large paved sun deck and an alfresco dining area with a colossal stone table which will seat up to 14 people.
