Villa Marie’s extensive living space and six bedrooms are spread across a series of pavilions in a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Balinese compound. At its heart is a large square living pavilion with glass doors on all sides, giving a choice of air-conditioning or sea-breeze-cooled living. Here, a table for 10 sits under a pyramid roof with an antique, ornately carved panel at its apex. At the four corners of the room are two separate seating areas, a media nook with custom-designed, bookshelf-lined banquette facing the TV, and a well-equipped open-plan kitchen with smart black granite countertops and gleaming stainless steel appliances.
An ironwood deck separates the living pavilion from the shallow T section of the 16-metre swimming pool that leads the eye towards the ocean vista. The deck encircles the pool, creating sunbathing areas furnished with all-weather rattan loungers and turquoise-cushioned loveseats shaded by turquoise umbrellas. To one side of the pool is the open-air dining pavilion with reed-lined roof supported on eight teakwood columns towering above a round table and chairs in all-weather rattan. Set before a coral wall lined with bright red Heliconia blooms is a kitchenette with sink and gas barbecue.
Flanking the pool are the two master bedroom pavilions with tall sliding glass doors leading onto the poolside lawn and covered terraces with glorious ocean views. Each room has a king-size batik-dressed bed sitting on teakwood parquet floors, a daybed or sofa and desk topped with a satellite-channel TV. Both ensuites have double basins, a statuesque terrazzo bathtub, walk-in shower and outdoor courtyard shower.
The four guest bedroom suites are neatly housed in a two-storey building behind the living pavilion, reached via an ironwood deck bridging ponds bubbling with fountains. With a king bedroom and twin bedroom on each floor, this is a great layout for two families. The downstairs rooms have an alcove daybed, sliding glass doors opening onto the garden on both sides, and a glorious outdoor bathtub sculpted from a granite boulder sitting on a bed of river-stone pebbles. The upstairs bedrooms have sliding doors opening onto balconies on two sides, and an outdoor shower. There’s a choice of air-conditioning or ceiling fan in all bedrooms, and all bathrooms have an internal shower enclosure and walk-in wardrobe.
